It has been highlighted recently by many public health experts that cloth face coverings are one of the most powerful weapons we currently have as a country to slow the spread of COVID-19. This critical information has helped increase the use of mask wearing among Americans, but more people need to join the movement.

That’s why Facts2Health, a collaboration between the entertainment industry, private sector, and the CDC Foundation, has launched the #HeroesWearMasks campaign. The #HeroesWearMasks campaign is supporting the efforts to combat COVID-19 through protective masks in tandem with the nationwide start of the academic year and a potential second wave of COVID-19 cases.

In early August, many stars answered the call and a week later, The Stan Lee Universe entered the fight by launching the #HeroesWearMasks online challenge. Stan Lee, who passed away in 2018, was a creator of famous Marvel comic book characters, including Spiderman, X-Men, Iron Man and more. Lee’s social media platforms announced the online #HeroesWearMasks campaign with a post of Lee wearing a mask and the #HeroesWearMasks rendered in classic comic-strip form. Within a day the post gained over a million likes.

Since then, many other stars have joined in the #HeroesWearMasks campaign, such as Mark Hamill, who played Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars saga and the voice of the Joker in Batman: The Animated Series; Tom Felton, who played Draco Malfoy in the Harry Potter series; and Mayim Bialik, who played Amy Farrah Fowler in the Big Bang Theory.

Anyone can participate in the challenge by posting an image or video of themselves wearing their protective mask along with the slogan, “I wear this to protect you” or “Heroes Wear Masks.” People are encouraged to challenge other hero friends to “show me your mask” with the hashtag #HeroesWearMasks. This could mean wearing a favorite superhero t-shirt, holding the Harry Potter wand you got when you were 10, or dusting off your old Spiderman Halloween costume while wearing your protective mask.

“Let’s change the narrative and make people understand that your mask is heroic, and you do it to protect your fellow human beings,” said Tom DeSanto, the creative force behind the campaign and producer of X-Men and Transformers.

The Facts2Health partnership encourages the spread of facts backed by science and helps combat the spread of misinformation. All #HeroesWearMasks efforts highlight the importance of individual action in combating COVID-19, aiming to create a social movement around wearing masks as a positive personal choice, underscoring how anyone can, and everyone should, be a hero in the battle against COVID-19.
